Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) 8-week Course

Mindfulness based stress reduction (MBSR) is an 8-week research supported group program that teaches mindfulness meditation as a means to improve health and reduce the negative impact of stress on health and relationships. Research has shown that MBSR can positively impact chronic pain and long-term health conditions as well as reduce anxiety and depression. MBSR is appropriate for anyone who has ever felt stressed or overwhelmed and would like to learn how to handle stress more effectively.

In this 8-week program, participants will learn strategies to increase self-awareness, manage negative emotions, and improve self-compassion. Participants will gain tools to cope more effectively with both short- and long-term stressors. Each weekly 2-hour session includes stress reduction techniques with guided mindfulness practice, gentle body movement, and group discussion. Skills will be taught and practiced in a supportive group environment.

No prior experience or knowledge of mindfulness is required. Experienced meditators are welcomed.

FREE Orientation: Monday, October 1, 3:30-5:30 pm

Weekly classes: 8 Mondays 3:30-5:30pm
October 8 - December 3 (no class on Monday, November 12)

All-day Retreat: Saturday, November 17 will be held from 9:00am to 3:00pm.

For best results, participants should attend the entire 8-week program. Practice outside of class is an important part of the program's effectiveness.

Note: MBSR may supplement, not replace medical and mental health treatment.

Robyn L. Gobin, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and UIUC professor who is passionate about helping others improve their lives. Robyn specializes in women’s health and interpersonal trauma. She earned her Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon. Because mindfulness has been so impactful in her life, Robyn enjoys helping others explore the potential benefits of bringing mindfulness into their lives. Robyn has received extensive training in mindfulness through the UCSD (University of California San Diego) Center for Mindfulness. She has a Provisional Certificate of Qualification in MBSR.
